Is this the year of Sporting Innovation?

This year is set to be one of action, passion, and drama across the sporting calendar. A new era of sporting entertainment is being introduced while the prestigious tournaments still take centre stage in 2025. From the Ashes down under to the Ryder Cup in New York, get ready for a year of unforgettable sporting moments!

New Era of Sporting Entertainment:

2025 is the start of a new era in sporting entertainment. Is the TGL, along with the Baller League, at the forefront of this shift in viewing?

TGL (Tomorrow’s Golf League) is a new golf league that will combine advanced technology with teams of top players from the PGA TOUR for two-hour weekly competitions starting on January 7, 2025. The league was founded by Woods and McIlroy's TMRW Sports, in partnership with the PGA Tour.
All matches will be televised (Sky Sports Golf) and they will all be held at the SoFi Centre in Palm Beach, Florida. The arena is a huge complex measuring nearly 250,000 square feet with room for 1,600 spectators. So how will it work? Longer golf shots will be hit into a 3,400-square-foot screen, roughly 24 times the size of a standard golf simulator. From about 50 yards and in, there will be shots to a large tech-infused green which can rotate and change in contours. Every shot will be live and all the players mic'd up, bringing unprecedented access and an interesting insight for golf fans. The likes of Matt Fitzpatrick, Ricky Fowler and Shane Lowry are all part of this new golf league.
Golf is undoubtedly following other sports such as cricket’s Hundred, which has received mixed reviews from cricket purists, but has brought new people to the game, especially families. Is the TGL another sporting gimmick or is it golf’s answer to the ever-changing sporting landscape?

Football is also entering the new sporting landscape with its introduction of the Baller League to the UK. Social Media Influencers and former professional footballers have teamed up to launch UK and American versions of Baller League in 2025. Football legends Gary Lineker, John Terry, and Luis Figo have been lined up as team managers, while Micah Richards, Alan Shearer, Freddie Ljungberg, Jens Lehmann, and Robert Pires have also been signed up as coaches. It represents a shift in how the sport is played, watched, and experienced. Will the Baller League transform football into a new era of entertainment?

The Ashes Down Under:

The 2025-26 Ashes is set to be one of the most eagerly awaited tours, with England captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum's plans over the next year (where they take on the tough opposition of India) geared towards the series. The question on every cricket fan's mind is whether Bazball can beat Australia in ‘their own backyard’. A new-look England bowling attack heads to Australia after the departure of Anderson and Broad. McCullum will have trouble choosing the top 6 with plenty of new talent but has two of the best in the world: Joe Root and Harry Brook to build around. The area where England could be fragile is the lack of a top-class spinner to hold up an end which the Australian Nathan Lyon does so well.
The first ball of the series will be bowled in Perth which is known for its pace and bounce which will test the aggressive England team. The series then moves to Brisbane (the home of the famous Harmison wide), the Gabba, and Adelaide followed by the famous Boxing Day at the MCG. The series finale takes place in Sydney where hopefully England will lift the Urn.
The last time England won down under was 2010-11 when Strauss led some of the all-time great England players KP, Cook, and Flintoff to a famous win. The hype around the 2025/26 Ashes series is huge. The flair and success of the England team are causing huge hype around the 2025/26 series meaning it is on the bucket list for any sporting fan. Ryder Cup:

After Europe’s success in Rome, the team heads to New York to take on the challenge of Bethpage Black against the Americans. Bethpage Black is renowned for being one the hardest courses on the professional circuit with the winning score in the 2019 PGA championship being 8 under par from Brooks Koepka. The USA captain Kegan Bradley will likely give instructions to grow the rough up and make the course long to favour the ‘bomb and gouge’ style of play from the Americans.
Luke Donald is rewarded with his second tenure of captaincy after his 16.5 – 11.5 win over the USA in Rome which was noted for his ability to create a strong team spirit and ultimately pick the right pairing that won the matches. This will undoubtedly be a tough test for the Europeans as the last time they won an away Ryder Cup was in 2012. Who doesn’t remember the famous ‘Miracle at Medinah’? It is a bucket-list sporting event, don’t dream it and live it with SGH!

British & Irish Lions Tour:

The Lions will be joining the men’s and women's cricket teams in Australia with their tour down under in June this year. Andy Farrell will take a squad of 42 to compete in a three-game series against the Wallabies along with five games against domestic clubs. Farrell will have some very tough decisions to make with who should be in the squad of 42 and who wears the prestigious Lions armband. The race to be the 2025 Lions captain is the toughest to predict in many years, as they enter a new generation without the likes of Alun Wyn Jones and Johnny Sexton. James Ryan and Maro Itoje are the two standout candidates, but all will be revealed shortly by head coach Farrell.
The Lions experienced success the last time they were on Australian soil in 2013, with a dramatic 2-1 series win following a memorable performance in the decisive final Test lifting their head-to-head record to 17 wins and six defeats in 23 Tests. It is set to be amazing with two very strong teams going head-to-head.

Women’s Sport:

It is an action-packed sporting calendar this year for the Lionesses, Red Roses, and the England women's cricket team. It is a significant year for the Lionesses who look to defend their Euros crown in Switzerland this July. Expectations and pressure will be high after winning the Euros in 2022 and reaching the final of the World Cup in 2023. The Red Roses host the Rugby World Cup and hot favourites to lift the trophy. England will be keeping a keen eye on New Zealand, who produce top-class rugby players as they see rugby as a religion rather than a sport. The final will be played at Twickenham, and the tournament is expected to be a huge success bringing more eyes to women's rugby. The cricket team is also heading to Australia to bring home the Ashes and win for the first time in Australia. The multi-format series runs from 11th January to the 2nd of February meaning there will be a lot of cricket to be played within three weeks so having a strong squad will be important as rotation will be required. England has not won an Ashes since 2014, but Heather Knight will be rallying her team to fly back victorious with the trophy in hand.

As the sporting landscape evolves in 2025, one thing remains constant: the love for sport. Whether you’re a fan of classic sporting tournaments or eager to explore new ways of watching sports, 2025 has something for everyone!
