FORMULA 1: WHAT'S TO LOOK FORWARD TO AND WHAT'S NEW IN 2024?
Tuesday, 23 April 2024
With two wins out of two already for Max Verstappen, it’s difficult to see how anybody will be able to overthrow the three-time champion, even at this early stage.
The Formula 1 season has begun, and Red Bull find themselves at the top of the tree once again.
With two wins out of two already for Max Verstappen, it’s difficult to see how anybody will be able to overthrow the three-time champion, even at this early stage.
While things on the track look as serene as ever, events off the track are anything but, and implosion looks the way that anybody might be able to come close to this F1 juggernaut.
Allegations have been made about Christian Horner’s behaviour in a controversy that hasn’t died down yet, and there seems to be a power struggle in the higher echelons at RBR involving Horner, Verstappen’s father Jos, and motorsport adviser Helmut Marko, but that hasn’t slowed Verstappen down yet.
With the Dutchman so dominant, and fan favourite Sergio Perez helping complete two 1-2s so far, it stands to reason that this will keep Red Bull very far ahead of their rivals.
It could well be a best of the rest type situation for the other teams, with Ferrari, Mercedes and McLaren seemingly scrapping it out for minor honours behind Red Bull.
What’s new for F1 in 2024?
It’s a record-breaking season for Formula 1 in 2024. The most races ever - 24 - will take place across 21 countries, so the jet-setting is on an unprecedented level this time around.
Shanghai makes its reappearance on the calendar after a Covid-enforced four-year absence, and after the potential for fan favourite Belgium to have moved to South Africa, it appears that this has not materialised.
Surprisingly, none of the drivers have switched teams, which is an extremely rare event in the close season of F1, so perhaps a more pertinent question would be - what’s going to be new in Formula 1 in 2025?
With Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton already announcing that he is joining Ferrari next year, it will be very interesting to see how those two teams’ fortunes fare this year. A lot of driver contracts are due to expire at the end of this season, so there will be a lot of drivers feeling the sweat on the back of their neck if they don’t perform. In fact, there are just six confirmed positions for 2025, so each driver will need to perform to their best if they want to guarantee racing for next year.
